Introduction: Why AMR Awareness Still Matters
Every year, World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week (WAAW) serves as a vital reminder of the growing threat that antimicrobial resistance poses to global health. In 2024, the theme focused on “Preventing AMR Together,” and Sustain Pharma Action (SPA) actively joined the movement through meaningful, on-ground outreach in Tanzania.
Our Outreach Initiatives: Where We Went and Why
As part of the Commonwealth Partnerships for Antimicrobial Stewardship (CwPAMS) initiative, SPA conducted community engagement activities at two key locations:
- 🏫 Mkunguni Primary School – Reaching young learners to build awareness early.
- 🛍️ Machinga Complex Market – Interacting directly with market vendors and the general public.
These venues were chosen for their high community traffic and potential to spark grassroots-level dialogue on pharmaceutical waste disposal, rational antibiotic use, and the threat of AMR.

Community Voices: Key Insights from the Ground
Our interactions revealed two major community concerns:
The Cost Barrier to Full Treatment:
Many highlighted how lack of access to affordable health insurance leads to incomplete antibiotic regimens, a key driver of antimicrobial resistance. This underscores the urgent need to align AMR prevention with universal health coverage strategies.
Limited Reach in Rural Areas:
Vendors and residents expressed a need for AMR education to go beyond urban centers and penetrate underserved rural communities where misuse of antibiotics is widespread.
Why This Matters for SPA’s Mission
At SPA, we believe tackling antimicrobial resistance requires more than technical solutions—it demands community empowerment, inclusive policy, and accessible healthcare. Our outreach reflects our commitment to:
Supporting sustainable systems to reduce AMR risk across Tanzania
Promoting safe pharmaceutical waste management
Educating communities about complete antibiotic use
Conclusion: Awareness is Just the Beginning
As we reflect on the voices from Mkunguni and Machinga, one thing is clear: real AMR prevention starts with community driven, sustainable awareness. SPA remains committed to expanding these conversations and building healthier futures together.
